Needing to increase the size

Of weekly congregations,

The vicar said, “We must devise

A few more celebrations.

Harvest festivals succeed

And Christmas carols too,

It’s celebrations people need,

Let’s think of something new!”

So every other week they tried

New ‘Celebration Days’,

Things like ‘Televisiontide’

And ‘Happy Hour Praise’.

At first it worked but numbers fell,

And zeal was on the wane.

And so, to make the numbers swell,

They had to think again.

‘I know,’ they said, ‘let’s just revert

To how things used to be,

And see how many we convert

Through prayer and psalmody.’

The old ways had a magic pull,

Tradition was the craze!

And now the church is always full

Thanks to the good old ways.
